Planning a Library Web Page

Forget the technology

Don't get worked up over figuring out Internet protocols and programming languages. Careful planning, good design, and common sense are the ingredients to a successful web site. Sometimes the worst thing you can do is turn over the construction of your library site to a third party that knows a bit more about the Internet but knows nothing about the library or its community.

Read: Use the skills you have developed as a librarian to design a new program of service to your patrons, and worry about the actual execution of the site later.

Get the Administration's Support

A library web site is not a one time expenditure of resources. It requires staff training, weekly maintenance time, and possible equipment/software upgrades. Be sure your administrators know this.
