History
Linwood history dates back to the days when the Delaware Indians lived and traded in the Kaw Valley area in the early to mid 1880's. The first name given to the town now known as Linwood was "Journeycake" after a Delaware indian chief that lived in the area between 1817 and 1867. In 1867, the town's name was officially recorded at the Leavenworth County Courthouse as Stranger, Kansas. The name Stranger soon became a problem for the community because the U.S. Postal Service often confused Stranger, Kansas with a nearby town called Big Stranger. So, on December 20, 1877, Stranger, Kansas was reestablished as Linwood, Kansas, a name selected because of the abundance of Linden trees that grew in the area. Before 1903 Linwood was located very near the banks of the Kansas River and much of its commerce was derived from the saw mills in the area, but flooding in the river valley compelled the residents of Linwood to relocate about a mile north to higher ground where the city is today.
