Brookville, located in Saline [SA] County about 15 miles southwest of Salina on KS-140, is a shady little town with several handsome old buildings including the Brookville Hotel. 1996 was the last year the beautiful old stone school was used as a grade school; it had had more than a hundred years of service. Besides the hotel and school, there are several interesting little shops along Anderson Street.KS-140 used to be US-40, an early transcontinental thoroughfare and predecessor to I-70. Back roads going south out of Brookville tend to be blocked by the Air Force gunnery range.
Dining
- The Brookville Hotel for many years was a favorite dining place, offering family style fried chicken in an old [1870] building. The food was wonderful, the surroundings delightful. Real Kansans had eaten there at least once.
The restaurant is now closed, in Brookville at least. Owners Mark and Connie Martin (785-263-2244) have reopened a replica of the hotel in Abilene, one block north of I-70 on Hwy 15.
