Transportation 		   Wellington is the county seat of Sumner [SU] county in southern Kansas. This area produces vast quantities of winter wheat and wheat is still the driving force behind the local economy. Railroads and petroleum are also significant, and manufacturing, especially aircraft parts, is growing. Wellington is fortunate in its access to transportation facilities; it's served by Interstate 35, Highways US 81 & US 160, the UP and Santa Fe railroads, and an excellent airport. 

The main business street, Washington, runs along a ridge above the valley of Slate Creek and has several interesting turn-of-the-century buildings. The downtown area still offers pleasant shopping in a variety of stores.

  • The city lake west of town has extensive parks and campgrounds 
  • The Memorial Auditorium downtown is an impressive memorial to the veterans of World War I. The Harlem Globetrotters have played here. 
  • Bones from a giant wooly mammoth are on display at the County Courthouse. 
  • You can fish in Slate Creek in Sellers Park. 
  • The City Council meeting room has a mural by Stan Herd. 
  • The golf course along US 160 is considered one of the state's best.
Wellington was first surveyed on April 4, 1871 and named for the Duke of Wellington. It was designated as the permanent seat of Sumner County in 1872, winning out over competitor Sumner City. Trading with the cattle herds coming up the Chisholm trail was an important factor in the early economy of the the town.
