Founded in 1879, the town's name was formed by combining the last names of Albert Warren and James Keeney, owners of a Chicago land company that planned the city. The Kansas Pacific came through the town assuring its future. A stone depot was completed in 1879 and the governor came to celebrate its opening.

An opera house was added to the courthouse square in 1884. The elegant stone courthouse was built in 1888-89.
