Sterling

Sterling was originally known as Peace when it was founded January 15th, 1872. The name changed in 1876 when the city had a large enough population to become a city of the third class.

The first train arrived at 4:00PM on June 26th, 1872 as the A.T.&S.F. built their track through the town site.

Landis & Hollinger erected the first business on the town site and moved in on May 10, 1876 with their stock of groceries, dry goods, queensware, boots & shoes, hardware, lumber, grain, furniture, farm implements, paints, oils, drugs, buffalo hides, and buffalo meat. The business was located on the northwest corner of Broadway and Monroe. The first tree was also planted in 1876.

Cooper Memorial College was established October 21, 1886. It survived as today's Sterling College.

Broom Corn was a major crop of early farmers.
