Russell Springs has a beautiful site on the ridge that forms the north side of the valley of the Smoky Hill River. You can see the impressive old courthouse, that is now the Butterfield Trail Museum, for many miles to the south.

Butterfield Trail Ride - Held the first week-end in June.
The ride starts on Saturday. To get there from Russell Springs go 9 miles east on Plains Road and 3 miles south on Road 350, or from Monument go 16 miles south on Road 350. The ride is via horsedrawn vehicles, horses and hikers covering the wide-open spaces and the Butterfield Trail which leads to Russell Springs. There participants will camp overnite. There's a dance Saturday night and an outdoor church service at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. The ride resumes at 9:00 a.m. Sunday and returns shortly after noon. The Trail Riders Rodeo starts at 1:30 Sunday.
