Melvern, located in Osage, [OS], County, is on state highway K31 a few miles north of I-35 (exit 160). To the north, it's bounded by the Marais des Cygnes River, and on the south and east by Long Creek. Two branches of the BNSF railroad meet here. The site of the town was once part of the Sauk & Fox Reservation. When the city was incorporated, April 17, 1884, the name was to be Malvern after the Malvern Hills of Scotland, but the new charter had the name misspelled. |
- There's a nice park downtown with play equipment and picnic facilities.
- The library in Melvern is run by the Entre Nous club. Arrangements like this were once common in Kansas and many public libraries started out as a project of a ladies' club.
- There's a neat old railway overpass that's well worth seeing and traversing.
- Just south of the tracks is an old stone schoolhouse that's now a bed and breakfast.
Melvern is home to the Melvern Reservoir, built and operated by the Army's Corp of Engineers. There are numerous campsites, some run by the Corp and some part of Eisenhower State Park. The area is well known for it's historical re-enactments during the summer.
