Leoti, the county Seat of Wichita [WH] county, is located at the intersection of highways K-96 and K-25. The downtown area features brick-inlaid sidewalks, park benches, and beautiful trees and flower planters. The attractive white-columned Wichita County Courthouse is a couple of blocks south of Broadway (K-96).

Cactus Flower The name "Leoti" is somewhat of a mystery. Several theories have been offered:

  1. Leoti is an Indian word that means "Prairie Flower", perhaps like this cactus flower.
  2. Leoti was named after Mrs. Leoti Kibbee, an early local pioneer.
  3. Leoti was named after Leoti Gray, the daughter of one of Leoti's founding fathers.

Leoti is famous as one of the participants in the bloodiest county seat fight in the history of Kansas. The Leoti-Coronado county seat fight was chronicled in the New York Times. Obviously, Leoti won and Coronado eventually became a ghost town.
