Hugoton is the county seat of
Stevens [SV] county.
It's in flat high plains country made prosperous by natural
gas and agricultural production. Downtown Hugoton and the
local schools reflect that prosperity. There's an amusing sculpture of two cowboys located on
Main Street.
In 1888, Governor John Martin had to send two National Guard
companies to stop the violence of the bitter Hugoton/Woodsdale
