Health Care

During the summer of 1912, Dr. S. B. Hewett, Dr. D. C. Smith, and Dr. J. W. Davis opened a hospital in the large old house of Capt. J. D. Barker, which stood where the post office stands today. After the property was transferred to tile federal government for a post office site, the hospital closed in July, 1916, for want of a home. While this privately operated hospital served Girard, 358 patients were treated, 325 of whom had surgery, and there were 28 deaths. Mrs. A. C. Wright was superintendent. In October, 1912, a fire of undetermined origin caused about $600 damage. Again, in December, 1914, a small fire on the roof was noticed by Capt. Barker, who, with the help of Mrs. Wright, put it out before much damage was done.

The Commercial Club of Girard saw the need for a hospital and circulated petitions in an effort to obtain a hospital for Girard. Their efforts succeeded, and in May, 1916, the newly selected board of hospital trustees purchased the site where the old Central School had burned the previous February, two blocks west of the square on Forest Avenue. 375 large loads of dirt from Burnett's Lake were hauled to fill in the grounds. In July, 1918, a new hospital building began to serve the community. Joe Kearns of Pittsburg was the contractor, and the cost was a little over $17,000. Hitch & Son contracted the plumbing, hearings and lighting. When an addition was completed in March, 1941, Mr. Kearns was once again the contractor. This building was used until 1969, when a new hospital, shown above was erected west of town. The name was changed to Hospital District #1 of Crawford County.
