Empire Cemetery is located in Lone Tree Township 1
mile East and 2 ½ miles South of Galva south of
the old town of Empire. It's a beautiful place
and is one of the oldest cemeteries in the region.
The earliest grave is that of Michael Sauer who
lost his way home in a blizzard and died on February
27, 1873. The second grave sites were for the two
sons of John Kohler who were killed when the
rain-soaked walls of a crudely constructed sod
house caved in during a storm.
