Radical, District #7
1870 - 1941
Louisburg Township 31-32; Range 15 East
The rich farm land of the Elk River bottoms attracted such numbers of families that in August of 1870, Radical District 7 was formed by county Superintendent, B. R. Cunningham. There were even hopes of a permanent town site at this location. A Colonel Samuel Young laid out such a site but it never got beyond being a rural hamlet. When school was opened for the 1871-1872 school year, eighty-one children enrolled. Classes were probably held during the organization year since the meeting for that purpose was held in "Radical City" on August 31, 1870. Enrollment held up well with one hundred five listed for the 1881-82 year with a Mr. E. N. Plank Jr. taught the school for $40.00 per month. It must have been too much for him for a Sarah Drouillard finished the term. When the Missouri Pacific Railroad was built through the county in 1886 and a station was located about a mile to the northwest of the town, the postoffice was removed to that point and families began to leave Radical City. By 1890 the school population had dropped to fifty-seven and by 1900 to forty-three.
The district continued to maintain its identity with nine boundary changes and a dwindling school population until 1939-40 when only three oupils were enrolled with Mrs. Jewell Perkins as teacher. The next year school was discontinued and on April 17, 1941 county Superintendent M. D. Smith attached the remaining area to the LeHUnt #113 district at the direction of a vote of the patrons at their annual meeting on April 11, 1941.
