in Montgomery County established in 1868 when this was still the Deminished Reserve of the Osage Indians" |
Elk City is located in Montgomery, [MG], County on the rich bottomland of the Elk River which runs just south of town. The valley is surrounded by the stone and oak covered hills that uniquely identify this part of Kansas. It's served by Highway 160 and K-39.Elk City offers small town living that is well described in a 1998 editorial in the Montgomery County Chronicle.
Nearby Elk City Lake is famous for its record catfish; in May of 1998, a 123 pound flathead was caught there. The state park at the lake offers some great hiking, and this part of Kansas is famous for its deer and turkey hunting.
