News came to this city the first of last week that Dr. G. F. Woodring had been appointed examining surgeon for this district. Our Independence brethern hearing of his appointment, and thinking that he would succeed Dr. McCulley, at once got up a remonstrance against his appointment and sent it to J. C. Black, commissioner of pensions at Washington, D.C. stating that Dr. Woodring "was a man without age, practice or experience, that his boast was he was always a rebel and a rebel yet, and that no union soldier could receive justice at his hands." Dr. W.'s friends hearing of the remonstrance, immediately circulated a petition among the members of G.A.R. Post No. 128 which was signed by 74 old soldiers, Democrats and Republicans alike, and sent to commissioner of pensions John C. Black, praying for his appointment to be maintained. For the benefit of our readers we publish the petition in full, which shows the best men in the country in favor of his being on the board.Honorable John C. Black, commissioner of pensions, Washington, D.C.; We, the undersigned veteran members of Elk City Post, G.A.R. No. 128, actuated by a sense of justice, and unsolicited, would respectfully represent to you, our reposing confidence in the surgical skill, the ability and patriotism of Dr. G. F. Woodring, a citizen of our community, respectfully pray you that his name be retained on the board of pension examiners, at Independence, Kansas and these, your petitioners, irrespective of party or creed, will ever pray.
