Anthony is the county seat of Harper [HP] county. It is surrounded by the rich red soil and wheatfields that make the area prosper.History
Anthony was named for George T. Anthony (1824-1896), Governor of Kansas at the time the county seat of Harper County was selected. The first courthouse was built in 1879 for use by the city. By 1905 the building had deteriorated badly and the present building was authorized in 1907. The cornerstone of the current courthouse, registered in the NRHP, was laid in January 1908.Special Events
- The Anthony Gun Club has registered trap shoots Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
- Since 1904, Anthony Downs has had summertime racing. Both dogs and horses race on the third and fourth weekends in July. At other times the track is used for training purposes.
