The Kansas Senate
currently has 30 Republicans (occupying the seats starting on the left
side of the chamber photo) and 10 Democrats. Each of the 40 State Senators
represents approximately 63,000 people in his/her respective district and
is elected to a 4 year term. New Senate districts remapped in 2002
will take effect for the 2004 election.

The Chamber is located in the East Wing of the capitol building, the first section of the Statehouse to be constructed. The Chamber floor is open to visitors from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday when the Senate are not in session. Guided tours of the capitol are available. The Legislative Session always begins on the second Monday in January of each year and lasts for 90 calendar days. This year's session began on January 10, 2005. The 90th day of the session will be April 9th. A complete listing of legislative committee rosters and schedules for the Senate and House are available here.
