Our Nation's Rich TodayWas in old England's debt, She held our bonds, a large amount, How much I now forget. But things have changed the other way, Old England is the buyer, We furnish them with food today, Our food stuff's going higher. O, yes, our country's getting rich, At least our papers say. Our ammunition plants and sich Are coining cash today. We feed the nations far away, We fill each brimming cup. O, yes, we're getting rich today As food stuff's going up. There is a class that's getting rich They're sure to be the winner; The poor man pays in extra cash, Each day he eats his dinner. And now as thousands cry for bread, They'll soon investigate So congress hustled up and said, We fear for some, "too late." O, yes, our nation's rich today, How is our working man? We hope our congress finds a way, To help him if they can. His labor brings but little more He has a bitter fight, His hungry children walk the floor, And food stuff's out of sight. __Nettie Squire Sutton. |
