Ere dawn, I saw the morning star
Enlapped by night,
A few grey clouds, strung far
Like swans in flight.
I heard a cockerel's shrill high call,
From out a sleeping farmstead, far away,
And knew, with humble thankfulness,
Life's darkest night brings day.
