Poetry of Kansas

John Brown

John Brown __ that's all; a serious-purposed man,
Hard-handed, tender-hearted; God's great plan
Through his gnarled, knotty nature pulsing ran.
"Fanatic!" hissed the, mob, with loud acclaim:
They unremembered; he, close-clasped by fame,
While fades away the gallows' dreadful, shame.
Each cause its Christ, its sacrifice to might!
Scorn soon is done, and Freedom's piercing light
Dispels the mists 'round Calvary's awful height!
