 KANSAS COLLECTION. 141

KANSAS, ON SOME FUTURE DAY.

COME, mark me what I say !
Kansas, on some future day,
Will stand in the lead of all
Municipalities on this ball,
Both in art and agricultural line,
For hers is a destiny sublime.
__John Preston Campbell.

I SIT upon a summer cloud. My car
Unseen I float, and view the lands afar,
  To choose, from many, one to guide my stanzas.
I see a free-born State, still free indeed,:
By thrift and temperance gaining the lead;
  Stand forth amid thy golden sheaves, fair Kansas.
__ E. P. Chittenden.

"AD ASTRA PER ASPERA."

BEAUTIFUL Kansas, whose glory and fame
Thy children in song and story proclaim;
Though born in battle and baptized in blood,
Thou art the home of the noble and good;
And thy sons and daughters shall grandly rise
Through difficulties to the starry skies.
__R. L. Cochran.

NOT for what she.has done for me,
      Though it be great,
For what she is, her majesty,
      I love my State.
__ Thomas Emmet Dewey.
