Poetry of Kansas

The Mendicant

Oh why should art go begging,
She has so much to share
Of life and love and beauty,
And all things fine and fair.

When music sounds her bugles
    The people crowd the way
As if there's nothing else to do
But just to sing and play.

But art can well be patient,
    She waits your quiet dole
And gives you back the wonder
    Of a transfigured soul.
