CobwebsA glint of silver sunlight that would stay (As her bright glance had sought to stay before) The pain that came with brushing them away. But he put out his hand and stepped inside; And all the anguish memory can bear, And all the sharp remorse that time can hide Flooded his spirit with their old despair. Only remained the walls, the mouldy floor, The shadowy windows___ah, a ghostly space Where once was home, where once the open door Had framed the glory of her form and face. He stumbled out beneath the sunny skies And brushed the clinging cobwebs from his eyes. __Kirke Mechem |
