Poetry of Kansas

Homecoming, 1918.

Two shall never see so much as the
                light of the sun again;
Three shall never dance.
Warped of mind incurably, or hardened
                of heart are ten.
The boys are home from France.

And there are known to even my
                gentle lad, more gentle now,
Things he will not tell.
But once he said, unthinkingly,
                the words slipped somehow
"The boys are home from Hell."
