Stars in the Darkness

The evening heaven stretched on high
        And I was dreary, quite;
I saw no stars, but saw the sky
        As black as primal night.

My heart revived; again, aloft
        I turned my gaze, and there
A thousand stars shone clear and soft,
        And this message to me bare:

The night of life has blessings true,
        Whose beauties are not seen,
While men note not the stars, but view
        The darkness in between.
