Mind or Matter? Is it sinew or The Soul?-- This that longs for heavenly virtue, And demands a heavenly goal? Is it matter, matter only, Push and pull of flying cells, That accounts for aspiration, And the prayer of faith impels? Is it all in stretch of fiber? And in tension of the nerves? Is the moving cause no deeper When one longs and loves and serves? Is it flesh that does the thinking? And does tissue will and plan? Is man's body his whole being? Is there not an "inner man"? Oh, the mystery of Being! Oh, the everlasting What! But-The Soul refuses ever To believe that it is not. |
