The gods profane, Morpheus is thy name; Not mountain's height Nor palace halls___ O'er all mankind you reign. Thou clement god To mortal man, Complacent is thy will; To soothe our fears With dreams of love, Our drooping hearts to fill. To deaden all Our troubled sense, To grant repose and rest, When other hands Oppress our lives Beyond the human test. For in thy realm We safely rest From all the ills of life; We find relief To all complaints We gather in the strife. Beneath thy balm Our pains depart; Disease, its power is stayed; Our fevered brow Is cooled to rest When in thy bosom laid. The anguished soul, Distressed and sore, While brooding o'er its woe, Is lulled to rest And soon forgets Misfortune's saddest blow. We bid thee reign To end of time; Thy mission is of earth, To heal mortals Of all distress, Beneath a common dearth. __James A. DeMoss |
