Poetry of Kansas

Consistency

'Tis well to think your fellow-man
    Should walk in paths of love;
To sober keep, as best he can,
    And hold himself above
The meaner grades of human life,
    And seek for to restore
The fallen ones, beneath the strife,
    Lost, lost for evermore.

To men of courage, firm and true,
Who dare to stand for right,
You think it well for him to do
    The battle with his might.
But when in turn his arms should fail,
    You never dare to lend
A helping hand, however frail,
    But rather choose offend.

Have principle to be, to do,
    Stand out upon some side!
Determined, help the battle through
    With manhood's earnest pride!
Firm to conviction ever stand,
    Your faith never deny
Till through conviction's guiding hand
    A better way espy.
