| SOFT, gentle gleams float from that distant star,
Whose mellow light sinks down into the soul, Leading it onward to its cherished goal, Though difficult the journey and so far. Yet on it presses, tossed amid the jar Of they who form Ambition's lengthy roll; Each striving hard to rise above the whole, While pressing on towards Hope's beckoning star. And when at last one stretches forth his hand To grasp his prize, so beautiful, so grand__ Lo! onward through the marsh of time it glides And leaves an empty hand grasping the air; When on again, more resolute he strides__ Soon lost, at length he sinks down from despair. __James A.
