|A bonnie rose is all I bring
For her delight; and yet no king
Were happier than I if she
Some gracious word vouchsafe to me,
Anent my little offering.
And, peradventure, should she fling
A smile upon the winsome thing,
Why, then 'twere lucky just to be
A bonnie rose.
Her slender fingers safe may cling
About these stems ___ no thorns shall sting,
Because I clipped each wilful wee
Thorn for her sake who is, pardie,
Herself___let men and angels sing!___
A bonnie rose!
