Band Artifact Preservation Opportunity
The band has been contacted by a private collector who
wants to sell the original ledger book used by Marshall’s Band in 1884.
The book contains minutes of the meetings as the band was being formed,
the names of the early band members, and lists of the music played during
the first few years of the band’s existence. There are also
numerous newspaper clippings about the band as they travelled across the
country performing at various venues.
Part official ledger, part scrapbook, this is an
invaluable piece of Topeka history and it should be preserved somewhere
where it can be studied by scholars and enjoyed by everyone.
Marshall’s Band would like to purchase this ledger and
donate it to the Kansas State Historical Society to ensure its
preservation for future generations. The seller is asking $1,500 for
the book—to date we have secured pledges for about two-thirds that
