Minutes  September 8, 2013

KANZA Chapter Oregon California Trail Association

Meeting called to order at 2:00 PM at Seneca, Ks Terrace Heights Center by chairman Ted Hopkins.

There were 9 members present representing 646 miles and 41 hours donated to OCTA.

Minutes of previous meeting passed out and approved as presented.

Treasurer, Arleta,  reported a balance of $8864.97 with $385.00 income from dues and expenses of $204.05.

We held discussion of old business of marking the Heisterman grave stone in Washington County and also the Maston grave stone site, Marysville, as a marking project.  No action taken.

Duane Iles, past national president, reported on the membership needs of OCTA.   We need to set a goal of new members as a percent of our present membership and assign a membership chairman for the chapter.

He also said that Jere Krakow is now the new preservation officer for OCTA.

John Schwartz volunteered to contact, for membership, the people who attended a National Park Service meeting in Blue Rapids recently.  National Park Service was gathering local input of future plans for Alcove Spring National Historic Site.  Arleta seconded that we do this and motion carried.

The motion was amended to include postage and envelope costs for John, was duly made, seconded and carried, to reimburse him for his efforts.

President Hopkins presented a request by Don Combs and Doug Tippen, asking  OCTA, KANZA Chapter for financial assistance in erecting limestone markers along the Military Trail in Riley and Pottawatomie counties.  It was concluded that KANZA as a chapter would be limited on providing dollars but we would lend our moral support and in-kind services for their project.

John Schwartz reported as being a part of the Marshall County Arts Cooperative.   They are interested in presenting at Alcove Spring, something similar to Council Groves’ “Symphony on the Prairie” program or activity.   He moved and motion was seconded that KANZA approve our endorsement of such an endeavor.   Motion carried.

The website for OCTA is being revised and national OCTA would like our KANZA website to be linked to it as a page which will show our local contact information.

Arleta moved to hold our next meeting in Blue Rapids with a catered lunch, Sunday November 10, 2013 .   Reservations for a plate count will need to be determined in advance by notifying her.   Motion was seconded and carried.

Alicia and Arleta will be on the nominating committee for officers next year.   President declared meeting adjourned at 4:05 PM .

Respectfully submitted

Charles Weickert, Secretary
