RECENT MEETING: Saturday, April 29, 2006
Why Write Poetry? by Dr. Jane Holwerda

The SPRING MEETING of District 7 of Kansas Authors Club was held on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Ward's Pet & Garden Center, 2703 Taylor Plaza - N. Hwy. 83, in Garden City, KS 67846. This meeting was open to all who are interested in writing.

District 7 2006 Literary Contest Winners Announced

Results of the Kansas Authors Club District 7 Literary Contest were announced by Contest Manager Lorena Joyce Herrmann, District 7, Offerle, at the district meeting held in Garden City on Saturday, April 29. Twelve entrants from western Kansas submitted a total of 16 entries in Prose Categories and 33 entries in Poetry Categories.

Winners in the 2007 D7 Contest are listed in alphabetical order:

John Barlettano, Holcomb — 1st place in Whimsy; 2nd place ties for two Sonnets; 3rd place each in Short Story, Memoir, and Inspiration.
Lydia Gonzales, District 7, Garden City, — Honorable Mention in Inspiration, and Honorable Mention in Free Verse.
Joel S. Herndon, District 7, Dighton — 1st place in Short Story.
Dorothy Jenks, District 7, Lakin — 1st and 2nd places in Feature Article; Honorable Mention in Memoir; 1st place in Senryu; 2nd in Whimsy and in Rhymed Verse; 3rd in Free Verse.
Rose Klenke, District 7, Spearville — Honorable Mention in Whimsy.
Barbara Lamborn, Sublette — 1st, 2nd, and Honorable Mention in Free verse; 1st, 3rd, and Honorable Mention in Rhymed Verse; Honorable Mention in Whimsy.
John Martin, Dodge City — 1st in Narrative Verse.
Charlene Scott, Spearville — 1st places in Story for Children and in First 5 Pages of a Book.
Velda Transue, District 7, Studley — 3rd place and Honorable Mention in Whimsy.

In Memoriam
Merettia Matkin, a long-time former member of District 7, died on March 30, 2006, at a nursing home in Bucklin, at age 91. She wrote poetry and was a member of Kansas Authors Club from 1971 until 2005. She is survived by her daughter Marla Matkin, Hill City, who was a member of District 7 from 2002-2004. 3/16 /06
