South Central District wishes all writers in Kansas an extremely festive holiday season. To celebrate the joy of writing, District 5 will be hosting its annual Holiday Party.
Not only will we be sharing our most favorite holiday goodies (pack your best one!), but Santa just might be making an appearance with some Creative Writing snippet tricks up his sleeve (bring along a notepad and pen).
District 5 welcomes guests of every writing genre at no charge. Come and celebrate the season with us! Happy Holidays. 10/31/2012

November's program highlighted our own writers from the South Central District in a read around. Light snacks were served. Our 2013 co-chairs, Cindi Kerr and Janet Bahl, for the KAC state convention asked for membersto brainstorm ideas and share what they consider to be highlights from the Salina 2012 convention.
In October District 5 members attended the 2012 Kansas Authors Club Convention in Salina, KS.
Sat., Sept. 8, 2012 Botanica Gardens • 701 Amidon • Wichita “Creative Workshops” 1:30-4:30 p.m.
September 8th promises to be an afternoon to remember. One of our most popular events is our annual Creative Workshops held outdoors amid the splendor of Botanica - The Wichita Gardens.
A meet and greet started at 1:30 p.m. followed from 2-4:30 p.m. by a choice of two workshops: Creative Writing, with Nancy Avery, and Photography, with Paulette Mattingly. A short break was followed by two workshop choices of: Poetry, with Roy Beckeymeyer, and Getting Started with Your Memoirs, with Dixie Brown. There is no charge for the workshops, but there was a special KAC group admission fee to enter Botanica. Earlier that same day, there was an important Convention Planning meeting, also at Botanica, about our 2013 KAC convention. Chairs are Cindi Kerr and Janet Bahl.
D5 took a slight siesta for July & August.
Things are quiet on the home front for now, but there's a lot happening behind the scenes in planning for the 2013 KAC Convention in Wichita.

He focused on providing presentations and writing with a comedic edge and a funnier point of view.

“Non-fiction Author Talk”
Dr. Donald Blakeslee, WSU professor, specializes in archaeology
of the Great Plains. He was awarded the 2011 KAC Ferguson History Book Award for Holy
Ground, Healing Water: Cultural Landscapes at Waconda Lake, Kansas. His presentation is scheduled at 2:00 with a short business meeting to follow.
Sat., Apr. 14, 2012 “Celebrate National Poetry Month”
Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, the state poet laureate from Kansas, is District 5's featured presenter, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Rockwell Library in Wichita. We are delighted that she will be joining us to "royally" celebrate National Poetry Month. There's a reserved seat with your name on it for this special program! D5's gathering is open to the public. Coffee and conversation will follow. Please don't hesitate to join us!

Ed Thompson is a Wichita native with a B.A. Journalism, M.Ed English Education. Ed had a 35-year teaching career, served as English Language Arts Dept.
Chair for 15 years, and participated in NEA Project to Improve
the Teaching of English

Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 “Writing for Children”
w/ Katherine Scraper, author, retired teacher
Before retiring from teaching, Katherine Scraper began writing teacher resource materials and kids' books for educational publishers around the U.S. and now writes full-time for Benchmark Education Company in Pelham, New York, from her home office in Wichita. Katherine's books are listed on her portfolio web site.

session took place, then a short business meeting, followed by
“The Collaborative Process”
Conrad Jestmore, District 5, Wichita, spoke on sharing his recent experiences of
penning a highly acclaimed and broadly embraced musical
adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. He also
discussed how he collaborated with composer-lyricist Paul Jackson and director Kathryn Page Hauptman.
