2007 Past Meetings:

District 3: September 8, 2007

Thirteen members and two guests attended the D3 fall meeting at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at El Charro restaurant in Coffeyville.
Ursula Turner, co-president, called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. For roll call each member was asked to talk about their current writing project.
Louise Swiger, secretary, read the minutes from the spring meeting and Grant Williams, treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report.
Lois Hendrix, Frankie Roland and Ursula Turner attended the board meeting in Wichita on Aug. 4. Lois gave a report on the meeting. The next KAC state convention will be held in Wichita Oct. 5 through 7.
Ursula asked each member to try and find potential new members for D3 since several former members have left and D3’s ranks are shrinking.
The D3 spring meeting will be held April 12, 2008, at Sirloin Stockade in Coffeyville.
Categories for the spring writing contest will remain the same as last year. Prose: Inspiration, memoir, short story and story for children, any age, all at word limits of 2000. Poetry: Rhyming, up to 40 lines; non-rhyming up to 40 lines; and Haiku.
Prose contest manager is Pinky Atkinson. Poetry manager is Louise Swiger.
Current officers where re-elected with the exception of co-president who will be replaced by a new vice president: Ursula Turner, president; Ruth Ames, vice president; Louise Swiger, secretary; and Grant Williams, treasurer.
Grant proposed to send flowers to member Linda Morris. Margie Marang will deliver them.
Ursula Turner told of her plan to visit with nursing home residents and ask them to write stories about their life. Grant Williams has visited residents of Medicalodge East in Arkansas City and the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. He reads poetry and mini stories to the residents on a monthly basis. He also prints and comb-binds books of short stories and poems in large print and leaves at least two books at each visit.
In addition, Grant Williams has donated children’s’ poetry to a Kindergarten teacher in Arkansas City. The teache ruses the books by leaving off the last word of a rhyme and then asks the class for the word.
Frankie Roland gave the program. She spoke about inspirational writing and called it the “Dessert of Writing.” She had a story published in the Sept. 8 issue of “Primary Treasures.”
Most members stayed after the meeting to have lunch and to visit.
On Sunday, Sept. 9, Frankie Roland and Ursula Turner held a book signing at the Cherryvale Museum which was celebrating its 43rd anniversary. Former KAC state president, Fern Wood, was also autographing her books. Fern is Special Exhibits coordinator at the museum.

Night Writers: August 28, 2007

The small room at Sycamore Landing was filled almost to capacity when 23 members and guests met there on August 28.
Two main items were on the agenda:
Rik Tanos discussed he book he is working on which will cover the last 100 years of the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo, held annually in Coffeyville, although it was canceled this year due to the flood. Rik invited members to contribute to the book by sharing any Fair memories they might have.
The other item was brought up by Ursula Turner who is making an attempt to have the children who were victims of the Coffeyville flood write stories about their experiences. Should they be too young to be able to write, they can draw pictures. These stories and pictures will then be put together into a book. The project will be financed by D3. Proceeds of the book will go to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army to be distributed among flood victims.
Members of Nigh Writers also voted on holding meetings throughout the year instead of taking a break in June and July as has been their routine through the last several years. The motion passed.
The assignment had been to write something about the flood, and members read their stories.
This was followed by visiting and enjoying snacks.
