December, 2013, D1 meeting was canceled due to wintery weather. No minutes are available.

Minutes: November 16, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club, met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on November 16, 2013 with 21 people present.

  • Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting at 12:30 p.m.
  • Brian Allen introduced his wife Tucker Allen who attended as his guest.
  • Errol Anderson and June Hilbert offered books for sale.
  • Patricia Bonine told about a call for submissions for prose and poetry.  Information about Reimagined: Bridging This World and Others may be found at http://www.utulsa.edu/nimrod/manuscripts.html.
  • Carol Yoho announced a book signing of local authors at Topeka Shawnee County Public Library on December 8, 2013 at 3:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Carol Luttjohnn told about an upcoming article to be in the Topeka Capital Journal featuring a story on care giving.  The article will include Carol’s experience caring for her mother with dementia. 
  • The minutes of the October meeting were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report and the report was approved.
  • Patricia Bonine asked for volunteers for the planning of the convention when District 1 will be in charge.
  • Evie Green announced the program for the December meeting will be presented by June Hilbert.
  • A read-around was conducted by Patricia Bonine.  A wide variety of prose and poetry was shared by members with a mixture of humor and solemnity.  Those participating were: Patrica Bonine, Janet Stotts, Glory Hemmingway, Reaona Hemmingway, Tom Ellis, Agnes Kazminski, Errol Anderson, Carol Yoho, June Hilbert, Dennis Smirl, Evie Green, Phil Morris, Barbara Brady, Karen Brown, Annabelle Corrick, Carol Luttjohnn, and Brian Allen.

The meeting was adjourned by Patricia Bonine at 2:00 p.m.

Minutes: October 19, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on October 19, 2013 with 20 people present.

  • Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting at 12:40 p.m. 
  • Patricia Bonine thanked Evie Green for getting the Kansas Authors Club District 1 2013 award winners recognized in the Topeka Capital Journal
  • Patricia Bonine introduced new member June Hilbert. June will be the speaker for the December meeting. Janet Stotts, also a new member, was welcomed along with first time visitor Wendy Pullen
  • Carol Luttjohnn, June Hilbert, Mark Bouton and Gary Clarke had books available for sale.
  • District 1 will host the 2015 convention and volunteers are needed for committees.
  • Carol Yoho announced that District 1 members Don Pady and Max Yoho were honored at the recent convention by receiving KAC Achievement Awards for their outstanding accomplishments and success in writing.
  • Opportunities are open for Kansas history stories, Inscape submissions and Glimmer Train contest.
  • The September minutes were made available and approved.
  • The treasure’s report was given by Glory Hemmingway and approved.
  • Gary Clarke, District 1 member, was introduced by Patricia Bonine. Gary, who has led 140 African Safaris, spoke about his latest unique book, They Call Me Cowabunga! Once Upon A Time In Africa. He read entertaining excerpts and told many colorful and funny stories. Sunday, November 10, 2013, he will do a presentation with a short video at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library. Following his program Gary answered questions and signed books.
  • The November 16th meeting will be a Read Around and members are invited to read pieces of short prose or poetry.

Minutes: September 21, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on September 21, 2013 with 20 people present.

  • Following lunch Vice President Evie Green convened the meeting at 12:30 p.m. in the absence of Patricia Bonine who was attending her brother’s memorial service.
  • Evie welcomed the group and no visitors were present.
  • The minutes of the previous meeting were made available and approved.  Evie reminded members that the minutes are available on line.
  • Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report and it was approved.
  • Flyers about the 2013 Nimrod Conference for Readers and Writers were made available.
  • Carol Yoho will be showing her art work at the Douglas Aaron Art Fair this week end.
  • The following writers had books for sale: Mark Bouton, Dennis Smirl, and Carol Luttjohann.
  • Yearbook submissions are due October 4, 2013.  If possible, these should be sent by email.
  • Evie Green introduced the speaker, Mark Bouton, KAC District 4 member.  Along with other writing accomplishments, Mark has written six novels, his latest is The ET Murders and will be for sale next Saturday at TSCPL from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  His presentation, “Using Flexibility in Your Plotting,” offered helpful information about planning, persistence, and plotting along with interesting UFO stories. He closed with a phrase from his favorite 1987 movie, Throw Mama from the Train: “Remember a writer writes always.” 
  • Evie Green announced the next meeting will feature well-known author Gary Clarke who will tell about his latest book.

Minutes: August 17, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on August 17, 2013 with 22 people present.

  • Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting at 12:30 p.m.
  • Minutes of the last meeting were approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report. The report was approved.
  • The next meeting of KAC District 1 will be held in the upstairs dining room due to a smaller number in attendance.
  • There will be a Local Author’s Fair on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library. Contact Charity Rouse at 785-580-4510 or crouse@tscpl.org for information.
  • Evie Green announced the date has been set for the KAC 2015 Convention and it will be at the Downtown Ramada Inn.

  • Storymakers Midwest Writers Conference is on Saturday, September 21, 2013 in Kansas City.  See http://storymakersconference.myshopify.com/

  • Books were made for sale by Tracy Million Simmons and Dennis Smirl.
  • Annabelle Corrick announced receiving an Honorable Mention in Columbia Anthology.
  • Sam Pierson has completed her new book titled House of a Million Mysteries.
  • Tracy Million Simmons, District 2, presented an informative and enjoyable program.  She gave an overview of her book, Tiger Hunting in Kansas.  She told how the idea for the book came to her and read excerpts from the book. She discussed the editing and publication process and answered questions from the group.

Minutes: July 20, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:20 a.m. on July 20, 2013 with 17 people present.

  • Barbara Brady convened the meeting in the absence of president Patricia Bonine. She reported that vice-president Evie Green was recovering at home following a medical problem and second vice president George Paris was out of town.
  • Veronica Laliberte and Betty Paxon were introduced as visitors and each told about their interest in writing.
  • Brian Allen, Agnes Kazminski and Dennis Smirl told about their books for sale.  Annabelle Corrick displayed the book Well Versed published by Columbia Chapter Missouri Writer’s Guild. The book is for sale and includes her writing.
  • The minutes of the June meeting were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway gave the financial report and it was approved.
  • Carol Yoho passed out flyers with the schedule for the 2013 Convention.  The early bird registration for the convention has been changed to a later date, September 1st. 
  • Reaona Hemminway announced that KansasWriters Inc. will be doing a Saturday workshop at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library and Kansas Authors Club may want to co-sponsor the event. More information will be given at a later date.
  • Carol Yoho along with Valerie Ireland will have a showing of photography in Baldwin City, KS, at the Lumberyard Arts Center, mid-August to mid-September. 
  • Dennis Smirl, a long time KAC member of District 1, was introduced.  Dennis has written nine novels and more than seventy short stories and novellas.  His unique presentation on “Writing Dialogue” included audience participation in writing dialogue using three groups of characters. Participants then read their work. Dennis discussed how each story was distinctive because we all put ourselves into our writing.    
  • The August meeting will feature Tracey Simmons of District 2 who is the author of Tiger Hunting.  Members were encouraged to attend.

Minutes: June 15, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on June 15, 2013 with 14 people present.

  • Following lunch vice-president Evie Green convened the meeting at 12:30 p.m.
  • Brian Allen and Dennis Smirl gave a brief description of their books and made them available for sale. 
  • Errol Anderson has completed a book about the wife of Andrew Jackson.
  • Carol Luttjohann was welcomed as a visitor.
  • May minutes were made available and approved.
  • Evie Green reported that plans for the 2015 KAC Convention are underway. 
  • District 4 member Mark Bouton will have surgery next week.
  • A read-around was conducted by George Paris.  Prose and poetry was shared by Dennis Smirl, Carol Luttjohann, Brian Allen, Evie Green, Glory Hemmingway, Janet Stotts, Bill Isley, Rosemary Torrez, Agnes Kazminski, Barbara Brady, Errol Anderson and George Paris
  • The program for the July 20th meeting will be presented by KAC member Dennis Smirl.

Evie Green closed with a poem and adjourned the meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Minutes: May 18, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on May 18, 2013 with 19 people present.

  • While lunch was being served member Dr. Phil Corbin shared news of four new books of his work made available very recently on Amazon.com.
  • At 12:30 p.m. Patricia Bonine, District 1 president, convened the meeting.
  • April minutes were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved as read. 
  • Patricia Bonine reminded members of the District 2 "Creative Streams Writers' Retreat" on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Bambino's, 1540L Wakarusa, Lawrence, KS, from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a silent auction.
  • Members were given the opportunity to vote on the theme for the 2014 KAC Convention to be held in Topeka in October, 2013. A committee is in place to work at determining just when and where the convention will be held and hosted by District 1. A winner was determined and announced before the end of the meeting.
  • The June 15, 2013 meeting will feature a "Read-around" by attendees. It is preferred that readers plan to limit their time at the microphone to a three-minute maximum.
  • Books for sale were made available by Gary Krohe and Agnes Kazminski.
  • Patricia Bonine introduced the speaker Gary Krohe who spoke about his new coffee table book, Portraits of TroyUsing the archives of the Topeka High Historical Society, he matched historical images of the school, built in 1932, with full-color images he took over the past two years. Gary discussed his project and the logistics of making his book a reality. A time for questions followed Gary's presentation.

Minutes: April 20, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on April 20, 2013 with 20 people present.

  • While lunch was being served at 11:30 a.m. president Patricia Bonine began the meeting since we were requested to leave early so another group could use the room.
  • The March minutes were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved as read. 
  • Patricia Bonine distributed material concerning the 2015 convention District 1 will host. Members were asked to think about convention dates, location, theme and speakers before the next meeting.  Committee members were appointed.
  • Evie Green distributed information about Gary Clarke (COWABUNGA) being a guest on Kansas Public Radio on April 22, 2013 from noon to 3:00 p.m.  Those making a pledge may call in and have their name announced on the air.
  • The May 18, 2013 meeting will feature Gary Krohe speaking about his recent book, Portraits of Troy, a photo history of Topeka High School.
  • Books for sale were made available by Brian W. Allen, Agnes Kazminski, and Mark Bouton.
  • Those wishing a new name tag should contact Reaona Hemmingway.
  • Patricia Bonine introduced the speaker Brian Allen who spoke about his recent book, My Paradise LostHe credits Tom Averill for giving him insight into publication of his memoir. Brian gave a personal account of life growing up in the Panama Canal Zone, the last of the golden years of the Canal Zone and the turbulent ‘60s and ‘70s. His book is available through Amazon.com and the Amazon Kindle Store. After his interesting presentation Brian answered questions from the audience and offered signed copies of his book at a reduced price for KAC members present.

Minutes: March 16, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on March 16, 2013 with 25 people present.

  • Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting. 
  • Patricia Bonine introduced Valerie Reif and Tanya Walsh, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Reader Advisory Librarians.  They discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald and his classic story of the 1920s, The Great Gatsby.  They provided a visual background of society in that period.  Following their informative and entertaining presentation they answered questions from the audience.
  • Patricia Bonine conducted the business meeting at 1:50 p.m.  She recognized visitors Robin Harris and Janet Stotts.
  • Max Yoho, Agnes Kazminski, and Mark Bouton had books for sale.  Phil Corbin announced that his books may be found on Amazon.com. 
  • The minutes of the February meeting were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report and it was approved.
  • Patricia Bonine announced the April meeting will feature Brian Allen who will discuss his book, My Paradise Lost, a memoir. The May meeting will be a read around. 
  • Patricia Bonine announced literary contests sponsored by Nimrod International Journal, "Nimrod Literary Awards" [submission deadline is April 30, 2013], and District 2. Information is available on the website.

Minutes: February 16, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on February 16, 2013 with 20 people present.

  • Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting.
  • Patricia Bonine reminded the group that membership dues should be renewed by March 31, 2013.  She also announced a writing contest sponsored by District 2 is open for submissions. The deadline is April 1, 2013.
  • Books were made available for sale by Agnes Kazminski, Reaona Hemmingway and Dennis Smirl.
  • Evie Green has a new email address.
  • The minutes of the January meeting were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report. The report was approved as read.
  • The March meeting will feature speakers from the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library.
  • Kansas Authors Club member Errol Anderson presented the program titled, “Why we are who we are.”  He shared what events influenced his life to help him become who he is now in today’s world.  He used personal examples including his remarkable recovery from a heart attack following a prayer by a black man in the hospital.  He began writing in retirement and has written five books and is working on the sixth book. Following the program he answered questions from the audience.

Minutes: January 19, 2013

District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on January 19, 2013 with 21 present.

  • Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting at 12:30 p.m. She welcomed Carolyn Conroy and first time visitor Terry Wiechman.
  • Dennis Smirl, Reaona Hemmingway, Mark Bouton, Debbie Roberts and Agnes Kazminski had their books for sale.
  • The December minutes were made available and approved.
  • Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report and the report was approved. 
  • Patricia Bonine reminded members to pay their dues.  The form is available on the website.  Even members over the age of 80 years should submit the form for documentation. She also reminded members to submit ideas to her for a theme for the 2015 convention to be sponsored by District 1. 
  • Carol Yoho announced the death of Grant Williams from District 3 and Gail Martin from District 5. Both were active KAC members. A new Kansas Poet Laureate will replace Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg if anyone wishes to apply for the honor. In the future Washburn University will host a reading of poets who contributed to an ongoing collection of poems.    
  • Mark Bouton announced he will be featured on a talk radio podcast at BlogTalkRadio. The program will be It Matters Radio in Entertainment on January 24, 2013 at 8:30 p.m.
  • Reaona Hemmingway announced a community novel writing workshop to be held at the Topeka Shawnee County Library on January 24, 2013 at 8:30 p.m. A workshop on editing your novel will be held March 12, 2013 at 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
  • Evie Green mentioned the deadline for submissions to the Annual Kansas Voices contest for writers living in Kansas is March 15, 2013. 
  • The February 16, 2013 meeting will feature Errol Anderson who address the topic “Why we are what we are.” 
  • Debbie Roberts presented a moving program about her book, Heart of Harveyville: Surviving the Tornado.  he related the process of gathering information, getting the book in print, and interviewing those affected by the Harveyville tornado. She read excerpts from the book and told of her personal experiences of the tornado.
