Minutes: March 16, 2013
District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on March 16, 2013 with 25 people present.
- Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting.
- Patricia Bonine introduced Valerie Reif and Tanya Walsh, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Reader Advisory Librarians. They discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald and his classic story of the 1920s, The Great Gatsby. They provided a visual background of society in that period. Following their informative and entertaining presentation they answered questions from the audience.
- Patricia Bonine conducted the business meeting at 1:50 p.m. She recognized visitors Robin Harris and Janet Stotts.
- Max Yoho, Agnes Kazminski, and Mark Bouton had books for sale. Phil Corbin announced that his books may be found on Amazon.com.
- The minutes of the February meeting were made available and approved.
- Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report and it was approved.
- Patricia Bonine announced the April meeting will feature Brian Allen who will discuss his book, My Paradise Lost, a memoir. The May meeting will be a read around.
- Patricia Bonine announced literary contests sponsored by Nimrod International Journal, "Nimrod Literary Awards" [submission deadline is April 30, 2013], and District 2. Information is available on the website.
Patricia Bonine adjourned the meeting at 2:00 p.m.

Minutes: February 16, 2013
District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on February 16, 2013 with 20 people present.
- Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting.
- Patricia Bonine reminded the group that membership dues should be renewed by March 31, 2013. She also announced a writing contest sponsored by District 2 is open for submissions. The deadline is April 1, 2013.
- Books were made available for sale by Agnes Kazminski, Reaona Hemmingway and Dennis Smirl.
- Evie Green has a new email address.
- The minutes of the January meeting were made available and approved.
- Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report. The report was approved as read.
- The March meeting will feature speakers from the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library.
- Kansas Authors Club member Errol Anderson presented the program titled, “Why we are who we are.” He shared what events influenced his life to help him become who he is now in today’s world. He used personal examples including his remarkable recovery from a heart attack following a prayer by a black man in the hospital. He began writing in retirement and has written five books and is working on the sixth book. Following the program he answered questions from the audience.
Patricia Bonine adjourned the meeting at 1:40 p.m.

Minutes: January 19, 2013
District 1, Kansas Authors Club met at McFarland’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on January 19, 2013 with 21 present.
- Following lunch president Patricia Bonine convened the meeting at 12:30 p.m. She welcomed Carolyn Conroy and first time visitor Terry Wiechman.
- Dennis Smirl, Reaona Hemmingway, Mark Bouton, Debbie Roberts and Agnes Kazminski had their books for sale.
- The December minutes were made available and approved.
- Reaona Hemmingway read the treasurer’s report and the report was approved.
- Patricia Bonine reminded members to pay their dues. The form is available on the website. Even members over the age of 80 years should submit the form for documentation. She also reminded members to submit ideas to her for a theme for the 2015 convention to be sponsored by District 1.
- Carol Yoho announced the death of Grant Williams from District 3 and Gail Martin from District 5. Both were active KAC members. A new Kansas Poet Laureate will replace Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg if anyone wishes to apply for the honor. In the future Washburn University will host a reading of poets who contributed to an ongoing collection of poems.
- Mark Bouton announced he will be featured on a talk radio podcast at BlogTalkRadio. The program will be It Matters Radio in Entertainment on January 24, 2013 at 8:30 p.m.
- Reaona Hemmingway announced a community novel writing workshop to be held at the Topeka Shawnee County Library on January 24, 2013 at 8:30 p.m. A workshop on editing your novel will be held March 12, 2013 at 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
- Evie Green mentioned the deadline for submissions to the Annual Kansas Voices contest for writers living in Kansas is March 15, 2013.
- The February 16, 2013 meeting will feature Errol Anderson who address the topic “Why we are what we are.”
- Debbie Roberts presented a moving program about her book, Heart of Harveyville: Surviving the Tornado. he related the process of gathering information, getting the book in print, and interviewing those affected by the Harveyville tornado. She read excerpts from the book and told of her personal experiences of the tornado.
Patricia Bonine adjourned the meeting at 1:15 p.m.
