Upcoming Events:

National Novel Writing Month (November) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing.
The challenge: to write 50,000 words in 30 days That’s an average of 1,667 words/day.
The only thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly. Writing begins November 1 and ends November 30. No exceptions.
Participation is free, winners are self-reported on the honor system, and no prizes are awarded outside of an extreme sense of self-satisfaction for meeting the challenge. While the concept may seem impossibly hard, in 2007, NaNoWriMo had over 100,000 participants. More than 15,000 of them crossed the 50k finish line by the midnight deadline.
Kansas regions are available, or start your own forum post for your area under the Kansas::Elsewhere regional forum.
Since 2005, NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program (ywp.nanowrimo.org/) has provided a special website and self-contained message board for all participants under 18, as well as those participating as part of a K-12 classroom group. Any participant age 13 and older can participate on the regular NaNoWriMo site. Register today at www.NaNoWriMo.org and set your region to Kansas :: Topeka. Check the Topeka forums for more local events and encouragement.

The iRead committee at Washburn University has decided to select Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America for the fall 2009 campus-wide read. The Bookstore at Washburn may get a discount on the books, and they'd like to bring the author to campus but budgeting will determine possibilities. Watch this space for details. 5/1/2009
