Everyone thought that the last KPLACE class was destined to be called The Last Class. But from the day they unpacked their multi-colored shirts, they were called The Rainbow Class.

“This is a thoughtful, multi-faceted class,” Shannon Roy said at the graduation party. “If you present one idea, you will be told the advantages of doing it another way. If you get starry-eyed, you will be told about the real world. But make sure you don’t attack their libraries or their communities. They are very passionate about what they do. They aren’t contrary but they are street-smart. They have been around the block a few times. They aren’t as young as they look.”

The KPLACE Class of 2007 had a good week. On Monday, they studied Collection Management with Carla Kaiser and Jenne Laytham of Basehor, Sharon Moreland of Tonganoxie, and Kaite Stover of Kansas City. On Tuesday, they discussed Marketing and Building Influence with Sue Blechl of Emporia and Effective Policies with Joyce Armstrong of Hamilton County and Denise Smith of Stanton County. On Tuesday night, they discussed the joys, challenges and problems of technology with Brenda Hough of NEKLS. They spent Wednesday with the technology consultants of South Central and discussed a wide variety of technical and human problems. On Thursday, Toni Boyles gave her wonderful workshop on leadership for the last time.

Also on Thursday, the KPLACE Roundtable sponsored a very successful program called “Re-Plant the Seeds.” Forty-seven librarians from all over the state, many of them KPLACE graduates, came to Emporia to discuss the new continuing education programs and many possibilities for Kansas library training in the coming years. Guest speakers were Jan Moltzen (Tall Texans Leadership Program), Rosanne Siemens (Kansas Library Association), Carla Kaiser (incoming KLA President) and Christie Brandau, State Librarian.
