Brenda Hough and NEKLS Are Shining Stars

by Cindi Hickey, WebJunction Kansas Coordinator

Brenda Hough, Technology Coordinator, and the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS) staff received the State Library’s Shining Star award at the NEKLS Executive Board meeting on November 16, 2006 in Lawrence. Christie Brandau, State Librarian, thanked Brenda and NEKLS virtually, and Cindi Hickey, WebJunction Coordinator for the State Library, presented the certificates.

Brenda Hough
Brenda Hough received the Shining Star for her dedicated work as a co-trainer and facilitator for the State Library’s "Building a Sustainable Future" project. The program content is built around a curriculum developed by WebJunction. Brenda and Cindi delivered 12 workshops across Kansas. These workshops were part of a nationwide project, Rural Library Sustainability (RLS), funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The focus of the project is to help librarians serving small and rural communities sustain public access computing. Continued support is being provided to workshop participants through monthly online meetings, a blog and a wealth of resources available in the Rural and Small Libraries section of WebJunction Kansas.

Brenda is a tireless supporter of WebJunction and the "Building a Sustainable Future" project. She also moderates a WebJunction online forum, hosts a monthly online seminar supporting the RLS project and served as a trainer at the most recent training institute for the next round of RLS states. She is a gifted and infectious trainer and willingly shares her knowledge of library operations, technology and customer service. Brenda is an advocate for excellent library service to Kansas residents at the system, state and national level.

Laura DeBaun Accepts Certificate for NEKLS
The Shining Star for NEKLS recognizes the system’s continuing support of, and assistance with, State Library programs. Specifically, the State Library thanks NEKLS for their support of the "Building a Sustainable Future" project by generously underwriting Brenda Hough’s time as a trainer. That project, however, is merely the tip of the iceberg for NEKLS support of library projects. As a recognized library leader, NEKLS consistently works to enhance library service to Kansas residents through innovative programs and services that are shared statewide. Just a few of these are: Kanguard (a free Internet filtering solution for Kansas public libraries), task force work on the statewide continuing education initiatives and on the statewide courier service, Kansas Libraries on the Web (KLOW), which gives small libraries the tools to build and maintain a web presence, and until recently, NEKLS maintained the Kansas library trustee database for the state.

The State Library recognizes Brenda Hough and NEKLS for their outstanding efforts in promoting and enhancing library services for all Kansas residents and thanks them for their support of State Library projects.
