Mission Statement

The mission of the Hesston Public Library is to provide collections, services, and programs to respond to the evolving informational, cultural, and recreational needs of its patrons.

Library History

Founded in 1937 as a project of the Hesston Women's Civic Club, the library was established as a "free" library of donated books collected "for the betterment of the Hesston community". Until it became officially a tax supported public library in 1967, volunteers from the Civic Club operated the library with both limited resources and limited hours of service. In 1972 a bond issue was passed and the city acquired the old Post Office building to house the library. Since 1972, two additions have been built on the original building. The Hesston Public Library was recognized in 1986 as one of 50 outstanding public libraries in the United States by the University of Illinois Research Center. Hesston Public Library is a member library of the South Central Kansas Library System, which has its headquarters in South Hutchinson, Kansas.

Collections

The library circulates nearly 40,000 items, including books for all ages, periodicals, recordings (records, audio-cassettes, and CDs), videos and DVDs, filmstrips, and audio-visual equipment. Special collections include educational toys (including a puppet theater), sewing patterns, and the following subject collections: quilts and quilting, ecology and the environment, landscaping and trees, transportation, inter generational relations, the Amish and Mennonites, learning to read, resources for after school activity programs, internal assets topics, conscious aging,  family diversity materials, spirituality titles, lifelong wellness materials, "G-rated" large print titles and traditional values fiction in alternate formats (CD books and DVDs).              Library Calendar--November 2009

"Rock, Roll & Read" Story Times for Preschool children have begun!
Registration is still open for children ages 3-6. Story time teacher Darla Harms-Becker will introduce rhymes, songs, games and other activities, and some great books too. Story times are free, and are on Wednesday mornings during the regular school year.

Used Books: Donated items and discarded library books are available to the public for a small donation. See the used books shelves in the Community Room of the library. Proceeds from used book donations help fund library programming such as book studies   and children's summer reading program and pre-school story hours.

Outreach services: The Hesston Public Library maintains outreach services to Hickory Homes, and Schowalter Villa. At the beginning of each month, 25 to 30 large print and other books will be delivered to each site. Residents may then check them out from their own institutional libraries. Different titles will be delivered on a monthly basis, and the previous month's collection returned to the public library. Library staff and volunteers will coordinate this service. A larger collection of materials is delivered to the Wellness Center each two months.

The Kansas Library Card is available at the Hesston Public Library.
