What does it take to get a library card?
/ Is there a cost for a card?
Cards are free of charge to Kansas residents with a current proof
of address. This proof could be a driver's license, checkbook or
a piece of mail. Visit our Circulation

How long can I keep a book? Can it be renewed?
Books check out for three (3) weeks and can be renewed once. An
extended loan period may be requested up to six (6) weeks if there
are no holds on the book and the book is older than six (6) months.

How long can I keep a videocassette or DVD?
Can it be renewed?
Videocassettes and DVDs check out for one (1) week and can not
be renewed.
How long can I keep a music CD or audio
book? Can it be renewed?
Music CDs and audio books both check out for three (3) weeks and
can be renewed once if there are no holds on that item.
Is there a limit to the number of items
I can check out?
There is no limit on how many items a patron checks out; however,
there are limitations for new patron cards and how many items may
be checked out in some of the library special collections, including
graphic novels and nonprint items. The Library encourages patrons
to check out on the number of items they feel they can financially
afford, in case of loss or damage to the materials.
Does the library charge fines?
Yes, we do charge fines. Books incur a .10 cent fine for every
day they are overdue, videocassette and DVDs - $1 a day fine and
other non-print items such as music and audio CDs - .25 cents a
day.
Can I access my account online?
Yes, using our online catalog you can view what you have checked
out and renew items. Be sure to have your library card number and
PIN ready as you will need them to get into your account. Visit

What if I have lost my PIN number?
If you have misplaced your PIN (personal identification number),
call the library's main desk at (620) 340-6462 and they can tell
you your PIN or give you another one.
How can I schedule a meeting room? Is there
a cost to use the room? How large are the rooms?
We have two meeting rooms. One is called our Small Room (Board
Room) and the other is called our Large Room. The Small Room holds
12 people and has 233 square feet. The Large Room holds 60 people
with just chairs (approximately 35 with tables) and has 970 square
feet. A small kitchenette is available to both rooms. It has a coffee
maker, refrigerator, burner for heating water and a few basics like
mugs. We ask that food not be prepared on site but food can be brought
in for use during the meeting.
The policy for our meeting room use is that the meetings be open
to the public with no charge to the attendees. We ask that the rooms
be used by nonprofit clubs and organizations only. We are sorry
that we can not accommodate private functions such as birthday parties
or wedding receptions. There is no charge for meeting room use.

The library provides three quiet study
rooms for use by the public for private reading, small group
tutoring, and small meetings (up to four people). They can be booked
by calling the second floor reference desk at 620-340-6450.
How can I give a gift in Memory or Honor
of someone?
Gift and Memorial brochures are available at the Adult Services
and Circulation desks. Please fill out one of these forms and give

Is there free access to the Internet? Do
I need a library card to use the computers?
Emporia Public Library offers free access to the Internet both
in the Children's Room and the Adult Service's Department. A user
does not need a library card to use any of our public computers.
The computers do have a software program that requires the user
to agree to our Computer Use Policy before he / she may begin. Users
are limited to 30 minutes on the computer during busy times when
there is a wait list. Visit
