The basic requirements for police officers are:
- 21 years of age
- High School or GED graduate
- Have a valid driver's license
- No felony convictions
- No significant records for traffic or misdemeanor offenses
- No convictions for domestic violence
Other areas which will aid applicant through process:
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in emergency services (Explorer, EMT, military, reserve officer, dispatcher, jailer, or other activity)
The Employment Process
The successful applicant is on probation for a period of 6 months. During this time a three month Field Officer Training Program is completed followed by an 14 week school at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) at Hutchinson. The applicant must successfully obtain state certification from KLETC within the year.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION An extensive search into the past of the applicant to check truthfulness of facts given on application and interview panel, issues related to the applicant's ethics, job experiences, community service and involvement and personal background.
CHIEF'S INTERVIEW Personal interview with the Chief of Police addressing issues arising from the interview panel and the background investigation.
- Top finisher advances to:
PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST A panel of tests given to judge the mental health of the applicant. Scored and evaluated by the department's psychologist who rules whether the applicant is suitable for police work.MEDICAL TEST A basic physical examination by the city's physician to ensure there are no medical conditions which would affect the applicant's performance.
DRUG TEST A check that the applicant has no recent use of any illegal drug or any medication which would affect the applicant's performance.
