Grinnell Public Schools
Community Survey Summary
March, 2006
Around 205 surveys were sent to
persons on the school newsletter mailing list. Of these, 113 were returned in time to be incorporated in
the survey. Two surveys were
turned in late and are not reflected in these results. We tried to eliminate any duplication
of surveys being sent to businesses and residences. Respondents to the survey were asked to complete a
demographic profile that identified them into several categories. Most surveys returned were marked with
multiple demographic options.
Issue 1
– Middle School Athletics
Several
surveys returned were marked irregularly.
On Issue 1 – Middle School Athletics, several persons failed to
mark an initial option, but marked Wheatland or Oakley for all 3 cooperative
options. Some persons failed to
mark this section altogether. On
Issue 2 and 3, some people only marked with an X or only marked a couple of
options. Also, we had a difference
of opinion in some households, so one spouse marked one way and the other
spouse marked differently. I tried
to accommodate these things as best I could.
The
following is a brief summary of the results for this issue:

Issue 2
– High School Athletics
For the issue of high school
athletics, a ranking system was used.
Patrons were to rank their choice as to how we should proceed with high
school athletics. A rank of one
would be the most favored option and a rank of four would be the least
favored. About five persons rated the options rather than ranking
them. In doing so they would give
more than one option a number one, two, three or four. These results were incorporated as they
were written. Some patrons (about
3 or 4) wrote only a number one, and some patrons (about 3 or 4) wrote only a
one or two. These results were
incorporated as they were written.
The
accompanying chart and graphs are fairly self explanatory. However, I did combine rankings one
with two and three with four. I
felt a ranking of one or two would indicate a favorable position, while a three
or four would be unfavorable. The
results are also indicated in graph form.
Issue 3
– Academics
A ranking system was also used for
the issue of academics. Again,
some patrons confused rankings with ratings, and I did incorporate those into
the results as they were written.
I
combined rankings one with two (favorable) and four with five (unfavorable)
leaving a ranking of three as neutral.
