Love And Loss.

And shall I say, Good-bye?
      And shall I feel depart
The glory from the eye,
      The gladness from the heart,
And desolation steal o'er all life's
            fairer part?

O loved ere sought and found!
      O loved, and lost apace!
O sweet receding sound And fading fainter trace
      Of backward footsteps now along
            life's empty space!

To feel the sovereign sun
But once, then know him set!
To thrill at touch of One,
      And then renounce, forget___
Nay, not forget, dear God, but thank
            Thee that we met!
