Poetry of Kansas

Thirty Vigils
in this town.
Also Bliss Mahan.
There is instant weather
and old is welcome.
I'm no morning star.
I don't believe
in holy cities.
From the window
there is nothing
but the ash-blond
as queen
in her blue dress.
All the intimate
and pale strangers
bring the east wind
and rain.
 My daughter
 points to the sky,
 to the tender red
 on the black clouds.
