But it soothed a stricken heart,
And from stony paths drew the weary feet
Within a flowery park.
It was only a little word, cruel and cold,
'Twas only a ripple of laughter, happy and bright,
'Twas only a little dewdrop, in silence it fell
'Twas only a faltering prayer from a broken heart,
But it reached God's throne,
