The New Youth

What though I build my idols out of clay
And cover them with gilt and gaudy paint?
Have you the right to give me other gods?

What though I fashion temples on the sand?
Is it for you to point out firmer ground
Until I've seen the lovely columns fall
And lie about me in their ruined state?
