Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society began in 1966 when concerned citizens of the community recognized the need for a genealogical organization to collect, preserve and disseminate genealogical and related historical data, with special emphasis on the preservation of Sedgwick County history and heritage.  The society is conducted as a non-profit educational organization under Internal Revenue Code, Section 501 (c) (3), operating as a corporation, with current bylaws and standing rules. MHGS is a non profit organization with no ethnic, age or racial restrictions.

The library is operated by an all volunteer staff. If you have a few hours a month that you could volunteer please contact us and we will match your skills and talents to our needs. Because our staff is limited when requesting copies of any of our material please allow four weeks for MHGS to receive and process your request.

For further information on the Society or membership please call (316) 264-3611 (during business hours) or send SASE to: Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1121, Wichita, KS 67201-1121 or stop by the library at 1203 North Main, Wichita, KS. E-mail: mhgs1121@aol.com .

You have, no doubt, heard by now that the 1940 Federal Census were released by the NARA on April 2, 2012. The digitized images of Kansas districts were indexed in less than two weeks after the state images are put up. Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies had agreed to coordinate the indexing efforts of all Kansas enumeration districts and we are very pleased at the tremendous response of our member societies and the individuals who helped accomplish the task.
How many times in your research have you used "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness" or ask that a photo be taken by a "Find-A-Grave" volunteer? Now is your chance to help out other researchers. You can sign up to help by visiting https://www.familysearch.org/1940census and entering your name and e-mail and by selecting Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies as the choice in “Group”, under additional information in your profile. There are still many images of other states to be indexed so please consider helping.
