Elizabeth A. Johnson McCann --
Elizabeth Johnson was born near LeRoy, Illinois, July 7, 1835, and died at her home in Soldier, Kansas, on Monday Oct. 26, 1908, after a long painful illness. May 17th, 1855 she was married to James R. McCann, and to this union
were born nine children seven girls and two boys. One daughter died when young and one in womanhood, and the remainder of the children except one daughter attended the funeral which was held in the Christian church on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 28. Rev. Wykert delivered the sermon. In October 1869 Mr. and Mrs. McCann and family moved from Illinois to Kansas and have lived in or near Soldier for nearly forty years. None but those who have sat in the shadow of a great bereavement can justly weigh such a sorrow as this. Those who have gone down into the valley of suffering and stood for months by the side of a loved one, as hope after hope droped away as the petals fall from a fading flower, know that such anguish cannot find solace in the tenderest, words. She who has gone forth could not be supported on her solitary path by any earthly friend. The husband, with a devotion few men are capable of, whose strength was given kindly and tenderly to this precious one, whose heroic devotion never faltered, could not detain her by the clasp of his earthly love. She has gone on and when we consider her great suffering we would not recall her if we could, but will remember her as a loving companion kind and watchful mother and true friend.
Survivors include a son Willis K. Johnson, Tulsa, Okla.: a brother, Todd Johnson, Topeka, six grand children and three great grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home at Holton. Burial will be in Soldier
Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas Heart Association and sent in care of Dennison State Bank at Holton.
