History

Map of Rooks County, KS in 1899
Organized in 1872.  Stockton.  In memory of John C. Rooks, private of Company I, Eleventh Kansas Infantry, who died December 11, 1862, at Fayetteville, Ark., of wounds received in the battle of Prairie Grove, December 7, 1862.

The Rooks County courthouse was designed by architect Frank C. Squires and was built during the period from 1921-1924.
 
The Special Collections of the Ablah Library at WSU contain historical images of Plainville, Stockton, Webster, and Woodston
 
William G. Cutler's History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about early Ottawa County.
 
The Kansas State Historical Society also has more historical data for Rooks County online including a rich bibliography and lists of cemeteries, post offices, and newspapers.

Special Places in Rooks County

Solomon Valley U.S. Highway 24 Heritage Alliance
Rooks County is one of six counties in the Solomon Valley Highway 24 Heritage Alliance.
 
The alliance is recording the history of the valley, showing visitors how to find interesting places between Hoxie in the west and Glasco in the east.

  • Webster Reservoir in western Rooks County provides excellent hunting and fishing as well as a variety of recreation activities such as boating, swimming, hiking, and special events.
  • Plainville Township Lake and Rooks County State Lake provide for additional fishing opportunities.
  • The old log hotel and the Frank Walker Museum offer and interesting view of Stockton's History.
